Kathmandu : The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) has threatened to go to the people if Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala did not step down and paved the wayfor the formation of post-election government after the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly on May 28, The Himalayan Times reported on Sunday.
“We will quit the Koirala-led interim government and go to the people if he does not respect the people’s mandate and clear the way for us to form a new government. We will pile pressure on him to step down on moral ground,” senior CPN-Maoist leader Mohan Baidya “Kiran” told the daily.
Baidya said the PM should invite the CPN-Maoist to take initiative for the formation of the next government. “Once he officially calls us to form the government, we will come up with our proposal of a consensus government,” he said.
Nepali Congress (NC) general secretary Ram Baran Yadav, however, said the PM will call the parties to take initiatives to form a new government during the first meeting of the CA. “But the Maoists must be ready to abide by seven conditions spelt out by the NC and past agreements,” Yadav said.
Amendment to the interim constitution with a provision of a simple majority to form and remove the government is one of the seven conditions.
Yadav said Koirala must have a role in the post-election phase. But he did not clarify what role.
