Vienna : IAEA director general Dr. Mohammad El-Baradei is preparing two reports about implementation of IAEA safeguards in Iran and North Korea, to be examined during meetings of governors council of the UN nuclear watchdog slated for June 2.
The first report is about developments of the Iranian nuclear file and outcome of negotiations with Iranian officials to tackle outstanding issues about Tehran’s controversial nuclear program, an official source at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) told KUNA Tuesday.
The source, requesting anonymity, said El-Baradei’s report about Iran would be distributed on Friday or next Monday on the UN security council (UNSC) members, IAEA governors and other members.
El-Baradei will inform them about state-of-play over the Iranian nuclear program and field visits paid by IAEA teams to Iranian nuclear facilities, said the source.
During the talks with Iranian officials, added the source, discussions revolved around concern of the Western countries about the nature of the nuclear researches and missile tests over the past 20 years.
The US and its allies are accusing Iran of installing new centrifuges thus challenging UNSC resolutions 1737, 1747 and 1803 which call on Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment until all outstanding issues are cleared.
But Iran insists that all issues were settled through a plan of action and a memorandum of understanding signed with the IAEA.
El-Baradei will highlight in his report level of cooperation between Iran and the Vienna-based IAEA and Tehran’s position over an additional protocol over sudden inspections, said the source.
Turning to the report about North Korea, the source said it would be about Pyongyang’s commitment to relinquishing its military nuclear program and apply the IAEA safeguards.
The source said reported nuclear cooperation between North Korea and Syria was not listed on the agenda of the governors’ meeting. Israel bombed a location in Syria saying it was used for nuclear purposes.
The Arab group to the IAEA are planning to raise the threats posed by the Israeli nuclear capabilities.
