Lebanon’s lawmakers to elect national president within 24 hours

Beirut : Qatar said Wednesday that Lebanon’s rival factions reached a deal, which will be “carried out immediately” and lawmakers of that country will elect the Lebanese president within 24 hours.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani announced deal between Lebanese factions in Doha, said that the election of a new president of Lebanon is to come within 24 hours.

Opposition-allied Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri, who spoke at the signing ceremony, said that over yearlong opposition protest encampment in central Beirut would be removed from Wednesday after deal in Doha.

On Wednesday morning, Lebanese rival leaders in Doha reached an agreement on resolving the political crisis, NBN TV quoted the opposition parliament member (MP) Ali Hasan Khalil as saying.

Lebanese rival leaders have reached a deadlock Tuesday over the election law after four days of talks in Qatar capital Doha.

Lebanese rival leaders have been in Qatar since Saturday trying to reach an agreement on the national unity government and the election law in order to “crown” this agreement by electing the consensus president.

Doha talks are aimed at solving the long ongoing political crisis in the country, which turned violent between pro-government and opposition supporters about two weeks ago.
