Damascus : Syria on Wednesday confirmed indirect peace talks with Israel through Turkey, the official SANA news agency reported.
“Syria has started indirect peace talks with Israel under the auspices of Turkey,” a Syrian foreign ministry source was quoted as saying.
“The two sides expressed their desire to conduct the talks in good faith and decided to pursue a dialogue with seriousness to achieve the goal of a comprehensive peace in conformity with the Madrid conference for Peace,” the source added.
The source also noted that the “tireless efforts” made by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan since more than a year ago and expressed appreciation for the role of Turkey and the efforts of the prime minister, SANA said.
During the Madrid peace conference in 1991, Israel and its Arab neighbors adopted the principle that Israel exchange territories it seized in the 1967 Middle East war in return for peace.
