Shifang (China) : Chinese troops rescued a woman Wednesday, nine days after the killer May 12 earthquake in southwestern China buried her alive under the rubble of a hydropower plant tunnel.
Rescuers said the grievously injured woman, trapped under the debris of the water diversion tunnel since May 12, responded to their call.
Zeng Changhui, whose age was not immediately known, was airlifted by a military helicopter to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Pu Jinhui, who attended to her after she was rescued from under the debris, said Changhui suffered multiple fractures in her right arm, ribs and lower back.
“Her injuries are not life-threatening,” Pu said, and added that still it was miraculous that she had been alive for so long without food and water.
Jinhe hydropower plant is located in Hongbai township, Sichuan province, near the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude quake that killed more than 40,000 people.
More than 10,000 people are still believed to be buried under the debris of flattened buildings but hopes of finding survivors are rapidly running out.
