Merkel calls for plant, animal species protection

Berlin : German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed here Saturday that the UN conference currently held in Bonn in eastern Germany must be capped with a call to relevant authorities worldwide for protecting diversity of plant and animal species and limit chances of their extinction.

Some 16,000 species of animals and plants are threatened with extinction, Merkel said in her weekly electronic newsletter, published by the information services of the German Government.

Such a threat is considered as a destructive means for basis of human beings’ lives, the chancellor said, adding that the protection of these species is one of the most importance challenges facing humanity.

Merkel pointed out that awareness has spread among people concerning species’ threat of extinction, saying that the German Federal Parliament, the Bundestag, has mapped out a national strategy to protect these species.

She mentioned that there is a dangerous phenomenon in German and the world in general, which is the elimination and consumption of forests at the expense of nature, and this would lead to shrinkage of woods, the homeland for the diverse plant and animal species.
