My husband is innocent, says Aarushi’s mother

New Delhi/Noida : A day after her husband Rajesh Talwar was arrested for the murder of their daughter Aarushi and their domestic help, his doctor-wife Saturday accused the police of indulging in “character assassination” and said the killings were the handiwork of an outsider.

A renowned dentist, Rajesh Talwar meanwhile moved a bail application in a Noida court citing health reasons.

Addressing journalists outside her house at Sector 25 Noida, Nupur Talwar, also a dentist, said the police had falsely implicated her husband and had also gone beyond their brief by character assassinating him and also their 14-year-old daughter.

“The killer is out there,” Nupur told a TV channel, echoing her husband’s claims that he was not the murderer.

Aarushi would have been 15 Saturday. A Class 9 student of Delhi Public School (Noida), she was found dead with her throat slit and multiple stab injuries on her face, chest and neck May 16.

Their domestic help, 45-year-old Hemraj, who the police initially thought was the criminal, was found dead on the terrace of the house the next day.

As they came under attack over the blunders in the investigation, the police then insisted that Rajesh Talwar killed his daughter Aarushi as she came to know about his affair with another dentist, Anita Durani.

The police said Aarushi had been discussing her father’s friendship with Durani with her friends.

Nupur Talwar refuted the police claim that her husband killed Aarushi and servant Hemraj to silence them over his alleged extramarital affair with Durani.

“It is utter nonsense, baseless. I know from my heart it is not true,” she said.

“Rajesh always doted on our daughter. It is not possible. We were such a close family. We had planned a birthday party today (May 24) for Aarushi,” said Nupur, her face bereft of emotion.

She said the Durani couple “were like an extended family to us”.

“I will fight it out in the court for Rajesh. I will try my best to get justice for the family,” Nupur Talwar said.

“Hemraj was our faithful servant. Saying that he had relationship with an innocent girl was also a crime the police have committed.”

Inspector General of Police (Meerut range) Gurdarshan Singh told reporters Friday that Talwar had objected to his daughter’s alleged close relations with Hemraj, prompting him to kill them both.

Nupur Talwar also dismissed the police claim of a close relationship between Aarushi and Hemraj.

“Hemraj was a servant whom I trusted. He was an elderly kind of person in the home. I do not think it would have been possible,” she said.

Aarushi, the only daughter of the dentist couple, had dinner with her family the night she was killed and had retired to her room in the three-bedroom apartment, the mother said.

Denying any “cover up” of the two murders, Nupur Talwar lamented: “Can any mother sleep through the night knowing that her husband has killed her child?”

Speaking on Rajesh Talwar and Durani’s relationship, Nupur said it was a professional relationship of 15 years while the police had projected their frequent meetings as illicit relations.

Durani also told a press conference that she had professional ties with Rajesh Talwar.

“In addition to our professional relationship, our children brought us together – Arushi and my daughter were studying in the same school,” she said.

“The police have not questioned me in the entire episode. Aarushi was like my daughter. I had good relations with the family and even used to drop Aarushi to school,” she added.

Rajesh Talwar’s lawyer Abhijit Banerjee filed two applications before the court of the chief judicial magistrate. In one he requested the court to shift Rajesh Talwar to a hospital where he could be treated for asthma. In the other he sought bail. The plea will come up for hearing Monday.

Aarushi’s friends came together to pay tributes to her on what would have been her 15th birthday Saturday.
