Former Bangladeshi army chief arrested on graft charges

Dhaka : Former Bangladesh army chief Gen (retd) Mustafizur Rahman was arrested Sunday in a corruption case involving purchase of Mig-29 warplanes.

The police arrested and detained Rahman at Apollo Hospital here, where he is undergoing heart treatment.

Then prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Rahman and some other top defence officials were allegedly involved in the purchase of eight Russian-made Mig-29 fighter jets in February 1999. The deal is alleged to have caused a loss of 7 billion taka ($100 million) to the exchequer.

Since assuming the office in January last year, the caretaker government has cracked down on corrupt politicians and businessmen in an attempt to clean up the country’s politics.

Nearly 200 politicians, including two former prime ministers, former ministers, MPs and businessmen have been arrested on charges of corruption, many of them have already been sentenced to various terms.
