Ranchi: Addressing the prize distribution ceremony at Center for Science and Literature in the city on 26th May, Jharkhand Governor Syed Sibtey Razi said minorities should benefit from fundamental changes in the field of education.
He said education has got the status of basic need for human beings as it plays an important role in development of consciousness besides building human personality. He said the rate of literacy in the state is less than 60% whereas this rate is worse among women. Mentioning the educational backwardness of Muslims, he said the rate of literacy among Muslims in Jharkhand is much below the national average. This state is at 27th place with regard to Muslims’ education.
According to a report, only 25% Muslim students pass matric examination. Most of Muslim students, girls outnumbering boys, drop out by the time they reach to high school level. Lower percentage of Muslim students passing out matric examination is a cause of concern for us, the governor said, adding that only near about 3% Muslim children are graduating. He told that according to a recent survey, only one out of 101 Muslim women happens to be able to complete B.A.
According to available information, Muslim population in the state is about 30 lac, of which 18 lac are women, but in spite of such a big population no Muslim woman occupies any higher office in the state. Presence of Muslims in IAS, IPS and other such positions is also very thin. So is their presence in the private sector. The governor said there is a need of special awakening drives to increase rate of literacy among Muslims.
