New York : UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday welcomed Nepal’s holding of its first constituent assembly, which immediately abolished the centuries-old monarchy in the Himalayan nation.
Ban congratulated the assembly on its “historic first meeting”.
“The people of Nepal have clearly spoken for peace and change,” he said, urging them to cooperate to form a new government as soon as possible.
The assembly voted overwhelmingly to abolish the 240-year-old monarchy and form a democratic republic.
