French radio, “France Info,” said in a bulletin that a businessman employed by the public works, construction and infrastructure company, “Vinci,” had been abducted by one of the Taliban militia, but few details were available.

Foreign Ministry sources would neither confirm nor deny the incident and said there was a “total blackout” on commenting on it.

According to the media report, the kidnapping allegedly took place two days ago and the victim was a former member of the French armed forces who had worked in the security area and had been close to the assassinated Afghan tribal leader Commandant Massoud.

The kidnapping comes at a time when France is reinforcing its deployment in Afghanistan and is sending an extra 700 troops to join the 1,600 already operating with the almost 50,000-man international force in the country.
