11 killed as mortar shell lands in crowd in Pakistan

Islamabad : At least 11 people were killed as a mortar shell landed on a road near a check post in Pakistan’s troubled Swat valley in northwest on Saturday, state television said on Sunday.

PTV reported that several other people were also injured in the incident at Wanai village in Swat.

Locals said the mortar was fired by Pakistani forces in their offensive against the militants but landed in an area where a group of people were waiting for opening of a check post.

Pakistani forces are engaged in offensive against the militants in Swat valley for several months, which has claimed lives of hundreds of people, including security forces.

In another incident in the tribal region of Mohmand Agency a mortar shell killed three people including a child early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Five other people were also injured in the incident.

Suspect arrested: Police arrested a suspected armed man near a function in which governor of North West Frontier Province was the chief guest to speak to paramilitary soldiers at the town of Shabqadar.

The police claimed that the man could be a suicide bomber.
