New Delhi : Two girls, aged three and 18, were injured after an iron bar fell on them at a Metro construction site near the Moolchand flyover in south Delhi, officials here said Sunday.
The accident occurred around 8.30 p.m. Saturday when an iron bar from one of the under-construction Metro line pillars bent and fell on Bhawna and her cousin who were taking a stroll.
Uncle of the three-year-old victim, Bhawna, alleged that Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) workers beat him up when he objected to evidence being “destroyed” at the accident site.
“When I tried to stop the DMRC workers from washing off the bloodstains, they started beating me up. They were trying to manipulate substantial evidences,” Bhawna’s uncle told media.
But DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal told IANS that the “accident was minor” and that “in fact, it was the relatives of the girl who beat up workers and two engineers and then apparently a scuffle broke out with workers lashing back. We have already filed a first information report (FIR) with the police on the matter.”
The girls were taken to AIIMS (All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences). The younger one had suffered injuries on her head and had to be given stitches.
“The girls have now been discharged from the hospital,” Dayal said.
“There is no such evidence of negligence – even so, the chief engineer met with relatives of the victims’ family to offer them compensation for medical costs. He will conduct an enquiry into the issue,” he said.
He said an official inquiry into the incident had been ordered.
In an incident earlier this month, a Metro viaduct had collapsed killing two and injuring 30 at a Metro construction site in Lakshmi Nagar locality of east Delhi.
