Washington : Some 78 percent of Hispanic voters in the US prefer Democrat Barack Obama as their next president, while only 13 percent supported Republican John McCain, a poll published Tuesday said.
The survey conducted by Univision, Reuters and Zogby from Oct 30 to Nov 2, revealed that three-quarters of registered Hispanic voters supported Barack Obama as their next president, Spain’s EFE reported.
A total of 1,016 registered Latino voters participated in the survey.
Fifty-four percent of the people said economy and employment were the main issues in the election, while 12 percent thought health care and immigration were key issues.
Hispanics make up 15 percent of the US population and nine percent of the electorate. Both Obama and McCain had fought closely to get their support.
In 2004 election, some 40 percent of the Latino population supported George W. Bush. He defeated Democrat John Kerry in the election.
The latest poll shows that Latino support for the Republican Party has eroded in recent months mainly due to government’s policies on immigration and economy.
