Jersey City (New Jersey) : A Sikh youth in the US who was allegedly asked to shave off his facial hair to get a job has filed a discrimination charge against the company.
The case against Tri-County Lexus – based in Little Falls, New Jersey – was filed last week, said Sikh Coalition, a NGO that filed the case on behalf of Gurpreet Singh.
Sikh Coalition said Singh had applied for an automotive sales position with Tri-County Lexus in February.
“After completing two days of preliminary training, a recruiter for Lexus told Gurpreet Singh that he would not be hired because Lexus has a corporate policy prohibiting facial hair for salespersons,” the statement alleged.
Officials of Tri-County Lexus, however, were not immediately available for comment.
Sikh Coalition, whose attorneys have been in touch with Tri-County Lexus, said the company denies having any such corporate discriminatory policy.
“But it has not produced documents stating so,” it said.
