Mumbai/Gorakhpur, India : As Maharashtra’s ATS prepared to interrogate a “high profile” leader from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the Malegaon blast, there is speculation that it could be a religious leader from the holy Indian city of Varanasi.
The Anti Terrorism Squad(ATS) remained tightlipped about the identity of the UP leader it wants to quiz but there were political overtones with a prominent BJP MP and religious leader from the state daring the Union Home Minister to take action against Sangh parivar leaders.
Amid serious concerns over the arrest of a serving officer in connection with the blast, Army Chief Deepak Kapoor said steps were being taken for checking profiles.
He said a number of steps were being taken to ensure that “such a repetition” does not take place. “It is yet to be proved but it may be an aberration. But we are taking steps in terms of checking profiles, looking at postings and how actions of each and every officer are determined”.
Sadhvi Pragya Singh and Lt Col S P Purohit, a serving Army officer, are among those arrested in connection with the September 29 Malegaon blast and are believed to be the main conspirators.
There were reports that the leader planned to be quizzed in UP had meetings with the Sadhvi and the army officer.
