Jammu : Former spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jammu and Kashmir Hari Om, who had resigned from the party in October, joined the Congress Sunday.
Former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, while welcoming Hari Om into the party fold, said: “He will be an asset to the party (Congress).”
State Congress chief Saif-ud-din Soz was also present on the occasion.
Hari Om said: “There are only two nationalist parties in the country. After having left one (BJP), I thought it best to join the other (Congress).”
Considered an intellectual and ideologue for the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, he had resigned from the party Oct 30, without citing any reason.
But party sources said that he had quit over sharp differences in the manner in which candidates were selected for the assembly elections.
The seven-phased elections in the state will be held Nov 17-Dec 24.
