Damascus : President Bashar al-Assad reviewed here with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband Syrian-British relations with the two sides stressing on the necessity of continuing consultation and cooperation between the two friendly countries on issues of common interest and on the basis of mutual benefit for both peoples.
Al-Assad and Miliband also exchanged points of view on developments of events in the Middle East, particularly in the occupied Palestinian territories, Iraq and Lebanon.
Miliband expressed his country’s great appreciation of Syria’s important and positive role and its efforts for the establishment of peace and stability in the region.
The talks dealt with the peace process in the region and the indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel.
Miliband stressed his country’s support for these talks, adding that Britain welcomes the progress made in this field, expressing the hope that these talks will continue as part of a comprehensive peace in the region.
In this regard, al-Assad pointed out that the peace process in the region needs seriousness on the part of Israel and an honest sponsor and an active European role as well as concerted international efforts.
The president stressed that reaching a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy resolutions is the only way for the establishment of security and stability in the region, subsequently reflecting positively on the whole world.
Al-Assad also expressed Syria’s deep concern over the tragic, inhuman situation in the Gaza Strip because of Israel’s siege and exercises, pointing out that breaking the siege has become an urgent need, and the European countries have to play their role in this regard.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, Assistant Foreign Minister Abdul Fattah Ammoura, the British ambassador in Damascus and the Miliband’s delegation.
In the same framework, al-Moallem met his British counterpart in the presence of Dr Ammmoura and the directors of the Foreign Media and the Special Bureau Departments at the Foreign Ministry.
