Chennai : Sri Lankan opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe Thursday expressed satisfaction over India’s moves to provide relief to the civilian population displaced by war in his country.
“After meetings with Indian Foreign Minister (Pranab Mukherjee) and other officials in Delhi, I am satisfied about India’s measures to end the strife in Sri Lanka and to reach humanitarian aid to the Tamils,” he told reporters here.
“The humanitarian issue, however, needs to be handled at our end a little better… Further, (President) Mahinda Rajapaksa needs to constitute an all-party meeting to find a solution to the (ethnic) problem,” he added.
Wickremesinghe, a frequent visitor to India, was on his way to Colombo after a visit to New Delhi.
In New Delhi last week, Rajapaksa assured protection to the Tamil community even as he vowed to continue with the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
India has sent 1,700 tonnes of relief material to Sri Lanka from Tamil Nadu for distribution among civilians, almost wholly Tamils, forced out of their homes in the country’s north.
