London : A huge haul of fake medicines in a raid by Spanish police suggests that it’s not a good idea to log on to buy pills to treat erectile dysfunction.
Detectives followed a trail of online advertisements for erectile dysfunction, or ED, to a filthy, run-down factory in Murcia, Spain, and seized 90,000 tablets of fake impotence drugs valued at about $1.7 million.
The fake drugs included well-known anti-impotence brands like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
The raiding team Thursday arrested an American citizen and a Dutchman who will be charged with endangering public health and breaking copyright laws.
The seized tablets were found to contain only around 60 percent of the ingredients of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
The manufacturers had, however, done an excellent job of replicating the packaging and shape of the tablets, police said, adding that only an experienced eye could tell the difference.
Police believe the tablets were being sold online to unsuspecting customers all over the world.
The police team said the factory where the drugs were seized was extremely dirty and was overrun by dogs and cats.
Fake ED medication is harmful not only because of its chemical composition, but also because of the filthy conditions in which they are made.
