Indian fishermen held in Sri Lanka may be released soon

Chennai : Seventeen Indian fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka for fishing close to the island’s shores Nov 18 may be released soon, the central government has informed Tamil Nadu.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahmed informed Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi about the matter, an official press statement said Friday.

“The Indian diplomatic mission in Colombo has been informed that the Indian fishermen will be released in a day or two,” the statement said.

Meanwhile in Pudukkottai district some 300 km south of here fishermen stayed away from the sea for the fourth consecutive day protesting against the arrests and the rising price of ice, media reports said.
