The two, identified as Tajuddin alias Chandan and Achintya Das, are believed to be members of a Maoist action squad in the state.

The police said the two were arrested from the house of Harman Sheikh, a leader of the state’s ruling Left Front constituent Revolutionary Socialist Party, in Kodalkati village.

Two stenguns were recovered from them.

“They were carrying 25 handbills which had names of several Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M) leaders as their targets. Bhattacharjee’s name figured on top of the hitlist,” a police official said.
