Ramallah : Mahmoud Abbas has been elected by the Central Council of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) as President of the State of Palestine.
Speaker of the Palestine Legislative Council Saleem Al-Zanoun told a press conference here that Abbas was elected despite the opposition of one member.
Abbas’ election took place following nomination by 75 council members who called for a vote, he said.
The PLO Central Council commenced a two-day meeting Sunday to discuss the progress of negotiations with the Israelis and inter-Palestinian conciliation.
Abbas’ term as Palestinian president expires on Jan 9.
