Dhaka : India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has got into a legal tangle as a Bangladeshi man has filed a case against the paramilitary force for allegedly killing his brother.
The incident took place earlier this month near Tentulia in northern Bangladesh’s Panchagarh district, but the BSF had regretted the killing then and taken action against the personnel responsible.
Abdus Salam, brother of Golam Mostafa, one of three people shot dead Nov 16, has lodged a case in a Panchagarh court with legal aid from the Bangladesh Human Rights Commission, the New Age newspaper reported Wednesday.
The case names Indian border guard R.P. Singh as the main accused. BSF company commander S.K. Singh and commandant of the 10th battalion Dibakar Kumar are named as accomplices.
On the night of Nov 16, members of Noyabari BSF outpost reportedlly intruded into Moynakuri village at the northernmost border of Tentulia in Panchagarh. They allegedly shot dead three people – an infant, his mother Majeda Begum and neighbour Golam Mostafa.
The villagers captured R.P. Singh and handed him over to the Bangladesh Rifles. He was then handed over to Indian authorities the following day, when the BSF apologised for the incident.
After taking the statement of the plaintiff Tuesday, Judge Abdul Malik ordered the officer in charge of Tentulia to register the case.
“The ruthless killing of the three Bangladeshis is a blatant violation of human rights,’ said Human Rights Commission upazila (sub-district) secretary A. Rahman Mukul.
He demanded exemplary punishment for the guilty BSF members, adequate compensation for the families of the dead and improved treatment for Majeda’s husband Shahidul Islam, who was wounded in the BSF firing.
India and Bangladesh share a 4,300 km long border that is riverine and porous.
