Romanians vote for new parliament members

Sofia : More than 18 million eligible Romanian voters headed Sunday to poll stations to elect new members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Central Electoral Bureau said in a statement that this election is first of its kind in Romania, where ballots are cast for an entire list of candidates selected by individuals rather than political parties.

The bureau said that such elections will most probably resulted in occupying 315 seats, where 18 can be added according to the various representations quota system in the country, while another 137 members in the Senate expected to be chosen.

Opinion polls suggested that the opposition is taking the lead after the Social Democratic Party chaired by Mircha Djoana accounted for 35 percent, followed by the president-backed Democratic-Liberal Party with 32 percent, and 27 percent for National Liberal Party headed by the country’s Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu.
