Mumbai : One member of a family which returned here after performing Umrah – a pilgrimage to Makkah performed anytime of the year – was killed and six others were injured when their speeding vehicle crashed into a stationery bus in south Mumbai Saturday afternoon, police said.
The victim – Mohammed Firoz Shaikh, 35 – and his wife Fauzia, 30, had Saturday morning returned to India from Saudi Arabia, where they had gone to perform the pilgrimage, which is different from the Haj. Haj is performed in Zeeqad, the 11th month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims usually perform Umrah during the last 10 days of Ramadan.
The family had hired a Maruti WagonR car to pick the couple up from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, said Inspector Bhaskar Odavant, the investigating officer from the Dadar police station.
After picking them up around noon, driver Ramesh Yadav was taking them to their home in south Mumbai’s Mohammed Ali Road.
Suddenly, at the Elphinstone Bridge, he knocked down a pedestrian, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a stationery bus nearby.
All the injured victims, including Yadav, pedestrian Naeem Ali Siddique, passengers Fauzia, her children – daughter Afreen, 15, and sons Mansoor, 8, and Ibrahim, 3, have been admitted to the Saboo Siddik Hospital.
The condition of Ibrahim, who was seated in his father’s lap, was stated to be critical.
Odavant said Yadav will face charges of rash and negligent driving, leading to the death of one person.
