Pakistan: govt for crackdown against hoax callers

Islamabad : The Government has directed the federal and provincial administrations and law enforcement agencies to double their efforts against the hoax callers and take strict action against them.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Central Investigation Agency (CIA) have been asked to launch a crackdown against the hoax calls and callers in collaboration with other intelligence agencies to avoid this practice.

The operation would initially be launched in all major cities, including the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Official sources said that at present there are 25-Telegraph Act available to counter threats and unwanted calls made by landline or mobile phones.

Under the telegraph act a hoax caller could be sentenced to jail for six months, however, the sources said that law enforcement agencies had prepared strict action against the hoax callers.

The sources said that FIA Cyber crime cell is also taking strict action under the cyber crime act against the elements involved in spreading the fake information through mobile SMS.
