Mutatkar reaches Bulgarian Open Grand Prix quarters

New Delhi : Indian shuttlers had a good day in office with Aditi Mutatkar reaching the quarterfinals in women’s singles and Jwala Gutta and V. Diju entering the last eight of the mixed doubles in Bulgarian Open Grand Prix badminton in Sofia Thursday.

Fifth seed Mutatkar beat Olga Golovanova of Russia 21-18, 21-6.

In the men’s singles, Ajay Jayram, Abhimanyu Singh and P Kashyap moved into round three.

Jayaram, seeded 12th, overcame a tough challenge from Israel’s Misha Zilberman 16-21, 21-18, 21-18 and set up a clash with top seed Joachim Persson of Denmark.

Qualifier Abhimanyu got the better of Denmark’s Sune Gavnholy 21-18, 13-21, 21-18 and ran into compatriot Kashyap, who thrashed Czech Tomas Kopriva 21-14, 21-18.

Jwala and Shruti scored a comprehensive 21-10, 21-7 win over Bistra Maneva and Victoria Zheleva of Bulgaria in the first round.

The mixed doubles pair of Jwala and V Diju, who won the Bitburger Open last week, pulled off a tough win against Baptiste Careme and Laura Choinet of France 21-13, 18-21, 21-12 to reach the last eight.

The men’s doubles pair of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas also booked quarterfinal berth after getting a walkover against local Kirov Tichomir and Kostadinov Konstantin.
