Srinagar : One person was killed and several others, including security men, were injured in heavy stone pelting by an unruly mob in Srinagar Friday during protests called to coincide with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the Kashmir Valley.
Protesters resorted to stone pelting at the police and paramilitary forces in the old city Nowhatta area, four km from city centre Lal Chowk, after the Friday prayers.
The police initially used batons and tear smoke shells to quell the mob, but were forced to resort to firing rubber bullets when they failed to bring the situation under control, resulting in the death of one protester.
“One protester has succumbed to rubber bullet injuries in Nowhatta, while several security men have been wounded in the heavy stone pelting by the mob,” a senior police officer told IANS here.
Manmohan Singh was holding a meeting with leaders of mainstream political parties in summer capital Srinagar when violent protests erupted at some places in the city, coinciding with his visit.
