Dead Sea, Jordan : Chairman of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA) Hans-Gert Pottering said here a declaration would be issued at the conclusion of EMPA meetings over the Middle East peace process.
Pottering, also President of the European Parliament (EP), said on Saturday there should be two states — Palestine and Israeli — living side-by-side in peace and security.
At a news conference on sidelines of EMPA meetings here, Pottering said that Jordan was part of this peace process and could not be excluded from any solution of the Palestinian cause.
It is time to see a comprehensive peace in the Middle East “which needs a bigger role of the EU,” he said.
“We, as European parliamentarians, are committed to the peace process and we are doing our best to reach peace in the region,” said Pottering.
The EP president, commenting on dialogue between Jordan and Palestinian Islamic resistant movement, Hamas, said this was a Jordanian decision “and it is not in our responsibility to say yes or no to these talks, however we hope these talks have positive and constructive results.”
The European Union (EU) is getting more involved in the peace process, he said, and cited the EU’s financial assistance to the Palestinians.
On the EMPA meetings, Pottering said the participants would discuss the Middle East peace process, water, pollution, energy and youth.
