Damascus : Syrian Minister of Information Mohsen Bilal has stressed importance on Saturday that just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East requires the implantation of the relevant UN resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative and forcing Israel to withdraw from occupied Arab territories to the lines of June 4th 1967.
During a meeting with Arab and foreign journalists participants in the Silk Road Festival for the year 2008, the minister indicated that Arab solidarity and Arab joint action are important pillars in the achievement of peace in the region, stressing that Syria, current president of the Arab Summit, has always worked for the achievement of Arab solidarity.
Regarding the indirect negotiations between Syria and Israel, Bilal said such negotiations aimed at finding the most suitable atmosphere for building trust, noting that such step aimed at a transitional phase which heavily depends on the Israeli government policies, especially after the recent elections there.
The minister added the indirect negotiations were also part of negotiations on redrawing the June 4th border lines of 1967, along with the complete return of the occupied Jolan Heights, stressing importance that Syria does not trust Israel where it negotiate on the issue from one end and attacks on the other.
The Syrian official noted that his country is also keen on having a Middle East clear of weapons of mass destructions, calling as well on the international community to monitor Israel’s nuclear arsenal.
Meanwhile, Bilal said that tourism can correct a number of incorrect images and ideas about the Arab and Islamic world, and help in understanding better the peoples’ culture and way of life.
