London : Officials have released new footage from CCTV cameras taken at the moment two suspected terrorists, including India-born Kafeel Ahmed, drove a burning car bomb into Glasgow airport on June 30, 2007.
Kafeel Ahmed, a PhD student from India, drove the vehicle into the airport on the afternoon of June 30, police said. He later died of burn injuries.
The footage was released as part of the trial of his passenger, Bilal Abdulla, and an associate, Mohammed Asha, who are accused of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions. Both have denied the charges and their trial is continuing.
The images, taken from CCTV cameras at the airport, show one of the men trying to fight off police and members of the public who are trying to tackle him, although he has been doused in burning petrol, according to The Telegraph.
In other pictures, members of the public can be seen running from the airport departure lounge in panic.
The Jeep, described by the police as a “mobile fire bomb”, was packed with 10 petrol containers, four oil containers and a number of glass bottles, some with wicks attached as petrol bombs.
While living and studying in Britain, Kafeel Ahmed is believed to have introduced his doctor brother Sabeel and cousin Muhammad Haneef to two other doctors, Bilal Abdullah, and Mohammed Asha.
After the Glasgow bombing incident, police in Australia zeroed in on Haneef, who was working there. His passport was revoked by the government to prevent him from leaving the country.
Subsequently, the Australian government dropped the terror charges against Haneef after prosecutors reviewed the evidence against him.
