Though no child died last month due to kidney-related problems, six of the 5,824 infants still in hospitals are in serious condition, the ministry said in a press release.

The deaths reported so far have occurred between May and August, the statement said.

More than 43,000 children have recovered medical treatment since the milk powder produced by dairy firm Sanlu Group was found containing the banned chemical melamine in September, the statement said.

Later inspection involved several other dairy producers.

On Wednesday, 203 children were hospitalized and 764 recovered, the statement said.
