New Delhi : India Wednesday pitched for renewed efforts to reform the institutions of international governance including the United Nations and the G-8.
“We need more than ever before a renewed effort to reform the institutions of international governance, whether it is the United Nations or the G-8. We need to work purposefully towards the conclusion of the Doha Round of trade talks in a manner that promotes development and inclusive growth”, said India’s Prime Minister, Dr.
Manmohan Singh inaugurating the 3rd (India-Brazil-South Africa) IBSA Summit meeting in New Delhi.
He said that the increase in energy and food prices and the challenge of terrorism threaten our developmental efforts. Adding that IBSA is uniquely placed to cooperate in these very important areas.
Expressing hope that the summit will come out with productive out come to deal with these challenges, Dr. Manmohan Singh said India has also circulated a concept paper on the future of agricultural cooperation among the member countries. He also called for focusing on implementation of the projects already identified so that the benefits of cooperation can be extended to the common man. Adding that India is committed to ensuring that IBSA realises its great potential.
Meanwhile, in their brief remarks, the President of South Africa Kgalema Motlanthe and the Brazilian President Lula Da Silva joined India’s call for restructuring the international institutions of governance including financial and UN bodies to reflect the realities of the present day world.
Kgalema also called for expediting the process of implementation of projects where agreements or MOUs have already been signed. He said the present turmoil in the international financial market must be dealt with in such a way so as to minimize its impact on the development process and the poor.
Lula also called for making the IBSA forum more efficient as it is an important forum for the south-south cooperation. He said efforts are on to intensify and widen cooperation so that IBSA emerges powerful globally.
