“Trinamool activists have promised a peaceful rally Monday. The Kolkata police is prepared to control any untoward situation that may arise during their demonstration,” city police commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty told reporters Sunday.

“10,000 policemen, including uniformed, casual-dressed and traffic police, will be deployed across the city. Personnel from Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Specialised Police Force will also be there.

“We are not keeping any fire arms this time, but only water cannons and fibre glass sticks to control any untoward incident,” Chakraborty said.

The Trinamool Congress will gherao (encircle) Lal Bazar – the city police headquarters – Monday to protest the arrest of Swarup Biswas, brother of party legislator Arup Biswas, and others for violence Oct 5.

Biswas and his friends clashed with the police at Charu Market area in south Kolkata after a private bus overturned. They were also alleged to have thrown stones at the deputy commissioner (south) Rajesh Subarna and other officers before setting four police vans on fire.

Swarup Biswas was arrested four days later from Kona Expressway.
