The party, which has developed a base in 12 seats of the Maoist-hit southern Bastar region, has decided to field senior leader Manish Kunjam for the Dantewada seat, while R. Sodhi will contest from Konta, which also comes under Dantewada district.

Polls to Chhattisgarh’s 90-member assembly are to be held Nov 14 and Nov 20.

The party will be fighting the Chhattisgarh polls in alliance with Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and two other outfits – Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party.

Political analysts say the party may perform better in the Bastar region, but may not be able to win seats except in Dantewada, thanks to former legislator Kunjam who has many protest rallies since 2004, taking up local issues.

The Dantewada seat is currently held by senior Congress politician and leader of the opposition, Mahendra Karma.
