Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was one of the first to phone the communist leader to greet him. Other prominent personalities to wish the chief minister included veteran playback singer K.J. Yesudas.

But it was business as usual for Achuthanandan as he attended work and then went home for a quiet lunch with his wife K. Vasumathy.

When asked by reporters what was special on his birthday? The chief minister said: “Only thing special is a cup of payasam (rice pudding).”

“For the last two years I was not here on my birthday but this year I am at home,” said Achuthanandan.
