Kolkata : Five members of a family, including four children, were killed and 120 shanties destroyed in a devastating fire at Shibpur in West Bengal’s Howrah district Tuesday night.
“Four of the five killed were children. All of them belonged to the same family,” a police official said, adding that four other people have been admitted to a hospital in serious condition.
The fire, which broke out at around 9 p.m. on Foreshore Road, was brought under control around midnight by seven fire tenders, officials said.
Senior police officers rushed to the spot to prevent any breach of peace, with shanty-dwellers protesting against the late arrival of fire brigade personnel.
The cause of the fire was yet to be determined.
