Further study on strengthening laws to deal with terror, says Minister Patil

New Delhi : The Government would require further study on whether amendments are needed to be brought in existing laws to deal with terror strikes, Home Minister Shivraj Patil told Rajya Sabha (Upper House).

Replying to a supplementary raised by Shobhana Bhartia (nominated) and Alka Balram Kshatriya (Cong) during Question Hour, Patil said on Wednesday the “issue has been discussed widely in the media and political circles … It requires more study”.

He said the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 was amended in 2004 to incorporate various provisions to deal effectively with terrorism and terrorist acts.

“In addition, provisions to deal with terrorist and subversive activities also exist in various other laws such as the National Security Act, Prevention of Money Laundering Act etc,” he said.

Patil said “suggestions have been received, from time to time from various sources regarding the need for further strengthening of laws and other related arrangements to deal with terrorism … These are being examined on a continuing basis and appropriate measures will be taken as found necessary as a part of this exercise”.
