Ahmedabad blasts: four suspects in police custody for 14 days

Ahmedabad : A local court has sent four people held in connection with the July 26 serial blasts here to police custody for 14 days.

The crime branch of the local police had sought their custody to interrogate them. Its lawyer told the court the suspects were “well-educated and could misguide the police”.

Naved Qadri, Ayaz Saiyed and Javed Ahmed Shaikh of Ahmedabad and Abbas Sameja of Bhuj were sent back to police custody until Sep 18 by judge G.M. Patel Friday.

The crime branch lawyer alleged that Qadri played a major role in persuading young men to undertake terrorist activities.

It said Sameja is likely to identify participants in terrorist training camps conducted by the Students’ Islamic Movement of India in Halol (Gujarat) and in Kerala.

A series of 16 bombings had ripped through the Gujarat’s main city of Ahmedabad July 26, leaving at least 29 people dead and 88 injured.

There are 15 other suspects in the custody of the crime branch’s while two are in the custody of the police in Surat.
