Srinagar : An earthquake of moderate intensity, measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, shook the Kashmir valley Saturday morning, a day after mild tremors were felt in the region. No loss of life or property was reported.
“The quake occurred exactly at 11.18 a.m and its epicentre was located in the Hindukush mountain region of Afghanistan,” T.K. Jotshi, assistant director of the meteorological office here told IANS.
A moderate-intensity quake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale had struck the valley Friday.
The temblor triggered panic among residents of the state’s summer capital Srinagar and many rushed out of their homes.
“The ceiling fan started rocking and so did the chair in which I was sitting. I ran out of my home in utter panic,” said Manzoor Ahmad, who lives in the uptown Hyderpora locality here.
A devastating earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale had struck Kashmir in October 2005 killing 80,000 people and rendering many homeless.
