Arab League representatives prepare for Monday”s Arab FMs meeting

Cairo : The 130th meeting of permanent representatives to the Arab League will be held here on Saturday, to prepare for Monday’s meeting of Arab foreign ministers.

The African Union’s Peace and Security Commissioner Ramadan Al-Amamra had arrived in Cairo early this morning to take part in the meeting, which is set to discuss Arab action in the political, economic and social spheres.

There are 33 topics on the agenda of Monday’s foreign ministers’ meeting, including a request by Syria to discuss the blockade imposed on it by the US over the purchase and leasing of planes and spare parts and the impact this has on safety and civil aviation.

In a statement, Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Ahmad bin Hilli said Iraq had requested the discussion of the Tigris and Euphrates water issue within the framework of Iraqi-Syrian-Turkish cooperation.

He added that others topics included the establishment of an Arab environmental facility, holding a general conference for Arabs living in foreign countries, and the request by some foreign countries for an “observer” status in the Arab League.

Other issues that feature on the agenda are developments in the Palestinian crisis and the peace process, Iraq, supporting peace and development in Sudan, as well as the crisis between Sudan and the International Criminal Court over accusations made against President Omar Al-Bashir.

Also to be discussed are a report by the secretary general on his visit to Nouakchott after the coup in Mauritania.
