Indian communists keeping China’s interests in mind: Chennithala

New Delhi : The Indian communists continue to support China and not India and have failed to grow beyond three states – West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura, Congress leader from Kerala Ramesh Chennithala said here Monday.

“If the communists continue with their pro-China stand, the people of the country will realise the hollowness of their ideology,” Chennithala, president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), told reporters here.

“The Left parties are keeping the interest of China in mind,” said Chennithala, while lavishing praise on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for pushing forward the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal.

“The communists have still not got national acceptability even after 60 years of the country’s independence. They are still confined to the three states of West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura,” he said.

Chennithala said the attitude of the Left parties toward the deal and China’s opposition to India acquiring nuclear technology was “clear evidence of the anti-national interest” of the Indian communists.

“Now the Chinese are demanding that Pakistan should be given membership in the elite NSG club. And the communists have still not realised the ground situation and are instead neglecting the sentiments of the people of the country,” he said.

During the debate at the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group Friday, China had raised a number of unspecified “concerns” and opposed India’s waiver.

The mouthpiece of the Chinese communist party, The People’s Daily last week had termed the nuclear agreement between India and the US as a “major blow” to non-proliferation.

When asked if he was for setting up a nuclear reactor in Kerala, Chennithala, who met the prime minister to congratulate him on the nuclear deal, said: “Kerala is a densely populated state. As a reactor has already been built in Koodamkulam in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, it is more than enough to supply electricity to Kerala.”
