Srinagar : The Jammu and Kashmir government Monday ordered a major reshuffle in the police top brass, changing eight inspectors general of police and six deputy inspectors general.
As per the government order, B. Srinivas will be the new inspector general of police (IG) for Kashmir zone, replacing S.M. Sahai who has been made IG crime. Srinivas was serving as IG (operations) of north Kashmir.
S.P. Vaid has been posted as IG homeguards/civil defence, Dilbagh Singh as IG traffic and Muhammad Amin Shah as IG telecommunications.
L.T. Mohanty will be the new IG human rights and Ravinder Kotwal will be managing director of the Police Housing Corporation, while Farooq Ahmad will head the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Ahmad is known as an ace police officer who came into the limelight when he investigated and exposed the infamous Ganderbal ‘fake encounter’ racket. Seven policemen were allegedly involved in the killing of a carpenter, Abdul Rehman Padder, in a staged shoot-out and passing him off as a militant in December 2006.
Among the six changes at the deputy inspectors general of police (DIG) level, Niyaz Mahmood has been posted as DIG south Kashmir range, Muhammad Subhan Lone as DIG armed police, K.K. Sahni as DIG Poonch/Rajouri range, P.R. Manhas as DIG home guards, Munir Ahmad Khan as DIG Srinagar/Badgam range and Abdul Gani Mir as DIG Baramula/Kupwara range.
