Media biased on conflict resolution: intellectuals

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia in collaboration with some international organizations organized a daylong workshop on “Communicating Peace” on September 4, at Tagore Hall, Dayar-I-Mir Taqi Mir, in JMI campus.

The Centre for Culture, Media & Governance (CCMG), JMI in collaboration with Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (NMCPCR), JMI, Global Partnership for Prevention of Arms Conflict (GPPAC), Netherlands and Regional Centre for Strategic Studies (RCSS), Colombo, had organized the programme.

Prof Mushirul Hasan, Vice Chancellor of JMI inaugurated the workshop and stressed the role and importance of media in promoting peace. Prof. Hasan also cited important examples from history and emphasized the need of the developing countries to explore meaningful solution to mitigate conflicts.

Saeed Naqvi, noted journalist and Senior Advisor, CCMG, JMI in his keynote address indicated that the mainstream media has failed to address the issue of conflict and promotion of peace.

Besides, a host of journalists, activists and academics participated in the daylong deliberations. Some of the noted journalists attended the programme included Matthew Rosenberg, Jyoti Thottam, Ajay Upadhyaya, Bipul Mudgal and B.G. Verghese.

The debate and discussions underlined the point that the media is no longer free from official and government line of thought as it should have been when it comes to issue of resolving conflict and building peace.
