R.P. Sengupta was flown in to examine the veteran Marxist, who has a blood clot in his head that has prompted doctors to consider whether the 94-year-old leader can undergo a “very minor operation”, a nursing home source said.

“Sengupta held a discussion with the 10-member panel of doctors treating Basu and expressed satisfaction with the treatment,” the source said.

“Apart from the clot, Basu is stable. He is on the normal diet,” he said.

No final decision has been taken on the operation, he said. “We are going to monitor his condition for another day now”.

There was a stream of visitors in Basu’s suite, including the state’s Health Minister Surjyakanta Mishra, Industries Minister Nirupam Sen and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Brinda Karat.

The veteran leader suffered “internal haemorrhage in the head” after he fell in his Salt Lake residence early Friday.

He underwent a CT scan the next day and was advised hospitalisation. He earlier received stitches on the forehead after the fall.

Basu was the West Bengal chief minister from 1977 to 2000.
