Brussels : Belgium rejects the accelerated entry of Georgia to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Foreign Minister Karel De Guch declared Saturday.
Addressing La Libre Belgique daily, De Guch warned of Georgia’s dangerous and unpredicted actions in the Caucasus conflict, generated by its attack against the autonomous region of South Ossetia over a month ago.
The Belgian minister recalled that in the last NATO Summit in April in Bucharest, it was agreed to postpone a possible membership of Georgia and Ukraine at least until December.
According to what was agreed, the 26 NATO foreign ministers would assess in Brussels both country’s action plans to obtain their membership.
The current Caucasus crisis should not influence on the agreed schedule to adopt the decisions, De Gucht highlighted.
The itinerant Council of NATO Ambassadors will arrive on Monday in Tbilisi to meet with the Georgian leadership.
Meanwhile, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said from Moscow Georgia’s entry to NATO is intolerable, and pronounced against a unipolar world.
