Steinmeier, in a statement issued by German Foreign Ministry, said Germany is fully supporting France, that currently holds the EU presidency, in handling the conflict in the Caucasus region Steinmeier contacted his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner on Sunday to address his country’s support for the EU efforts “to consolidate the Caucasian cause.” The German Minister considered the Russian withdrawal from Senaki-Poti line as the first step towards implementing the six-point plan that was reached September 8 between the EU, Russia and Georgia regarding the Russian forces withdrawal from the Georgian territory. Steinmeier strongly called on all concerned parties in the Caucasus region to fully commit to signed agreements, noting that it was the only way to resolve dispute and restore stability in region.

He expressed his confidence towards the EU to keep promises and that the union was determined to send inspectors to the Caucasus region as soon as possible, pointing out that such a decision was expected to be endorsed in today’s meeting that would group the EU foreign ministers.

Germany is planning to send about 40 inspectors among other 200 European observers, he added.
