Kolkata : Former West Bengal chief minister and veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu, hospitalised here with a head injury, underwent an MRI scan of the brain Monday, hospital officials said.
“The decision to go for the MRI scan with contrast was taken by the 10-member medical board treating him after a CT scan done Sunday revealed there was no appreciable change in the blood clot in his head,” AMRI Hospitals vice president S. Upadhyay said.
The MRI scan gives a more detailed of information of the examined part of the body than the CT scan.
The board, which examined the 94-year-old leader Monday morning, decided to keep him under observation, Upadhyay said.
“After getting the MRI scan report, the board will review Basu’s condition Tuesday, and then decide when he can return home,” he said.
Other than the clot in the brain, Basu’s condition was stable and he was on normal diet.
He suffered “internal haemorrhage in the head” after he fell in the bathroom of his Salt Lake home early Sep 5.
He underwent a CT scan a day after his fall and was advised hospitalisation. He also received stitches on his forehead. A second CT scan was done on him earlier last week.
Basu was the West Bengal chief minister from 1977 to 2000.
