Sydney : Former Australian coach John Buchanan’s eldest son Michael will play for Indian Premier League (IPL) side Kolkata Knight Riders against the Queensland Bulls.
Powerful all-rounder Michael, who has played 11 one-day games for Queensland but is not currently contracted to the Bulls, will wear the black and gold of the Knight Riders and take on his teammates in Twenty20 matches.
Michael, 25, has close ties with the Kolkata as he was their strength and conditioning trainer during the last IPL season.
The Kolkata squad, coached by Buchanan Sr, is training in Brisbane for a fortnight and will make use of coaching staff including Queensland fast bowler Andy Bichel and former Bulls wicketkeeper Wade Seccombe, Fox Sports reports.
IPL bosses will meet soon to establish the guidelines for next year’s competition.
Buchanan has urged them to retain salary caps.
“For this type of competition to be successful, it should not come down to who has the biggest chequebook,” Buchanan said.
